Myths and Legends in Killarney
Lough Léin is the largest between the three lakes in Killarney. This lake is teeming with many myths and legends, starting with O'Donoghue's Curse. This one legend tells the story of the great chieftain O'Donoghue who once ruled the region. It says that every seven years on May Day, he would rise from the lake's depths while riding his magnificent white horse and the luckiest who would have the chance to see him would be granted a glimpse into the past and future.
The second legend is bout the Ross Castle which according to some would be haunted by the wails of a banshee whose mournful cries foretell the death of a member of the clan O'Donoghue clan.
The third legend deals with the fact that the Gap of Dunloe a beautiful mountain which seems to came straight out of a fairytale would be formed by the mighty footsteps of the giant Fionn mac Cumhaill.
