Queen
Elizabeth II
Queen
Elizabeth II was born on April, 21st 1926 in London and died on
September, 8th 2022 in Scotland. She was the queen of United Kingdom
from 1952 until her death. She reigned for 70 years. She
is the
second-longest
of any sovereign state and
the longest of
any Queen regnant in history.
Was
Queen Elizabeth II really a good queen ?
Elizabeth was patron of more
than 600 organisations and charities. The Charity Aid Foundation
estimated that Elizabeth helped raise over £1.4 billion for her
patronages during her reign.
She
was a symbol of stability due to her very long reign, through
different wars and political crises. She was queen of the seven
sovereign states of Commonwealth from 1952 of which 4 stayed under
her commandement : New Zealand, Australia, Canada and United
Kingdom. Almost every year, she adressed a special message to the
peoples of Commonwealth and attended Commonwealth Day in London.
These
actions gave her recognition and thanks from the British people and
prove that she did a great job as the queen of United Kingdom.
However,
some people think that she was too cold when the famous Lady Diana
died back in 1997. These critics are still in some people’s mind even if she regained her image after this bad moment. Also, others
think that her reign is « useless, pointless and overrated ».
That the monarchy is an « outdated tradition », thinking
she symbolised the colonial past of the country.
Even
if she did excellent
work
with the Commonwealth, she still had a bad image related to
the colonial past of the countries part of the Commonwealth. The
peoples of the countries part of the association were upset that the
queen never once made
explicit apologies for the violence, slavery and repression committed
by
the UK. This attitude was seen as a voluntary
silence. These
countries wanted a moral recognition of the wrongs suffered. Because
of that, some of them have broken away from the crown.
In
conclusion, Elizabeth’s
reign was marked by a constant commitment to her responsabilites, the
stability of the United Kingdom and her support to charity
associations.
However, her image was tarnished by the different crises she was part
of. Thereby, she was an efficient and devoted queen, mixing the
admiration of some people with the critics she received.
