AMC Meta and Ireland (Abyss)
Meta has been implemented in Ireland since 2009. This gives many advantage to Ireland and Meta but it also has problematic effects. The documents show precisely what are the issues and what are the positive aspects. How do historical landmarks and architecture reflect centuries of conflict, colonization, and modern economic appropriation in Ireland. Firstly we are going to explore the bright sides of the relation between Meta and Ireland, then we will see the disavantages and finally the limits of the relation for Ireland.
First of all, Meta has based its international headquarters in Ireland. As the document A shows us, Mark Zuckerberg decided to join the "trend" like Jeremy Irons and John Malone and bought an Irish castle so he can better manage Meta's headquarters. Moreover, in the document B we can see that in Ballsbridge in Dublin a new campus has been created to be more profitable to Meta and its Irish employees. In 2009 when the first Irish office opened there were just 25 people. But "now there are more than 2000 people across 80 teams in three Irish locations" which show that Meta offers many jobs to Irish people. Furthermore, Meta's international headquarters "marks the start of a new phase in Ireland", indeed this gives an important role to Ireland and improve the technology domain, also, the new campus made possible the increase of Meta's profits since last year. Additionally, the third document, present the advantage for Meta to having put its companies in Ireland. Actually, the primary interest for Meta is the low corporate tax rate which generate higher profits than if Meta had established itself in the US. Because now "tech companies have become a central part of the Irish economy" which is a great interest for Ireland as well, and it gives to Ireland a chance to be more seen by the world.
Secondly, the establishment of these headquarters has consequences, notably because of the purchase of Mark Zuckerberg. The fact that he bought a castle is problematic "due to the potential importance of managing the land to deal with climate change. The document A explains that most of the new landowners search privacy and want to cut off the land which is bad for the environment. Besides, document C, demonstrate that Meta is defrauding in Ireland because there is a "tax loophole" which allowed US companies to avoid taxation. Additionally "if Ireland were to lose the Information and Communication Technology sector's contribution, it would see a 12 percent decline in direct tax as per 2024 figures" which would have a very awful impact on Ireland.
To conclude, Meta and Ireland have a strong link notably in economy but both of it have positive and negative aspects.
